Once again.... dear Board of Canvassers.
Further beseeching at the meeting of the Barrington Board of Canvassers Jan. 3, 2024
It seems that it would be incredibly easy to lose sight of the ultimate purpose of the significant (and increasing) logistical caretaking required of this body. That purpose being the true and accurate capturing of the voice of the qualified electors of Barrington.
The incredible burden being placed on the local Board to facilitate ‘election months’, instead of an ‘election day’, contributes to a climate wherein our attentions are prevented from attending to what should be the primary focal points of a canvassing body. The first, the maintenance & verification of the voter rolls, has been, unfortunately, usurped by the state. The second, which is being left to the state’s programming, is the count of the vote as recorded on the ballots.
It remains my earnest hope that this body will perform the required legal due diligence, and implement an ongoing policy of local manual review of its ballots, for the purpose of verifying the vote totals against the numbers presented by the tabulator tapes. While this will not preclude our interests from being circumvented via ‘mail ballots’ that we can never see, it will go a long way towards providing some transparency to voters.
With regard to the proposed compensation increase to counterbalance the increased workload mentioned earlier in this meeting, perhaps a better solution would be to increase the number of members of the board, so that the work may be spread amongst more people.
Thank You.
